One-Stop Shop Certification & Auditing

Our European and global auditors offer cost-effective combined audits for EU MED Wheelmarking and UK Marine Equipment Module D, EU/UK Construction Products Regulations (FPC), and EU/UK PPE Module D, streamlining compliance for both EU & UK markets.

Marine Equipment Conformity Assessment Modules

Marine equipment requires type examination (Module B) and either batch approval (Module F) or factory audit (Module D or E).

Module B - EC Type-Examination

All Fire protection equipment must undergo Module B (EC Type-Examination) by a Notified Body.

  • The manufacturer must submit the equipment together with a Technical File for type-examination.
  • Our certification services, backed by the specialist knowledge of staff and accredited test laboratories, will assess equipment and technical files, together with any test reports, for compliance with the relevant testing standards and international regulations.
  • Once approved, a Module B EC Type-Examination Certificate is issued. All fire protection equipment must also undergo one of Modules D, E or F – checking of the product or of the production.
Modules D & E

Suitable for equipment made in continuous production, or with complex testing requirements, such as marine firefighter PPE.

  • Module D is suitable for manufacturers with an approved quality-control system, such as ISO 9001 or similar systems.
  • Module E is for manufacturers with an approved quality system for final inspection and testing.
  • Once the initial audit is complete, a Module D or E certificate is issued listing the relevant Module B certificate, and the manufacturer can make their EU declaration of conformity and apply the Wheelmark.
Module F

Suitable for simple marine equipment made in discrete batches, such as blinds and flooring.

  • Representatives of the EU notified body  must visit the manufacturer and select samples at random from the batch to be approved.
  • TThe samples are tested by the EU notified body to ensure that the batch conforms to the relevant testing standard, and matches the performance of the original type-examination.
  • Once complete, a Module F certificate is issued against the relevant Module B certificate, and the manufacturer can make their EU declaration of conformity and apply the Wheelmark.
The MarED Database

The details of all approved Marine Equipment are published on the MarED Database, available to the public here. Only those products with a valid Module B Certificate and also a valid Module D, E or F Certificate are visible.

Approval of Marine Equipment For EU Ships

MED conformity assessment ensures marine equipment meets EU regulations before applying the Wheelmark for use on EU ships. Notified bodies handle approval processes on behalf of their national Flag State Authority.

The latest EU Implementing Regulation, which lists the marine items and applicable testing standards, is available from the EMSA MED Portal, available below.
